Here’s to you, Mom!

Writer's picture: Patrick SiskPatrick Sisk

Mother's Day is approaching, and for many, it's a time of celebration, gratitude, and heartfelt tributes to the women who have shaped our lives. I know that Mother’s Day can look different for every person. For some, it’s a time to celebrate, for some it’s a time to remember and sadly for some a time to mourn. As a comedian with a unique perspective on family dynamics, this day holds a special place in my heart. You see, I'm a comedian with an adopted mother, and let me tell you, the comedic material practically writes itself!

Growing up, my mom always had a knack for finding humor in the everyday chaos of raising a child. Whether it was my knack for getting into mischief or her endless patience in dealing with my shenanigans, there was always a punchline waiting to be delivered. But it wasn't until I reached adulthood that I truly appreciated the comedic goldmine that is my relationship with my adopted mother.

One of the things I love most about being a comedian is the ability to find humor in the most unexpected places. And let's be honest, adoption comes with its fair share of quirks and idiosyncrasies that are ripe for comedic exploration. From the awkward family gatherings where people try to figure out who looks like whom to the inevitable "You're adopted? I never would've guessed!" comments, there's never a shortage of material to draw from.

But beyond the punchlines and the laughter, there's a deeper appreciation for the bond between a mother and her child, regardless of biology. My mom may not have given birth to me, but she's been there for every milestone, every triumph, and every stumble along the way. And while our relationship may be unconventional by some standards, it's no less meaningful or enduring.

As Mother's Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on all the ways my mom has shaped my life and influenced my sense of humor. From her quick wit to her unwavering support, she's been a constant source of inspiration both on and off the stage. And while I may not always express it in the most sentimental of ways, I am endlessly grateful for the laughter, love, and levity she brings into my life.

So here's to you, Mom, on Mother's Day and every day. Thank you for being the punchline to my jokes, the straight man to my comedic antics, and the rock upon which our family is built. You may not have given birth to me, but you've given me something far more valuable: a lifetime of love and laughter.

So here is to the countless ladies who have been like a mother to me. Helping raise me and helping me become the person I am today…yes I am blaming you!! Haha

And here is to the mother of my children. I know it’s not easy to have to raise two “little Patricks” but you make it look easy. Thank you for going above and beyond being the best mother to two of the cutest but craziest kids out there…I mean they are part me after all!!

As I prepare to take the stage and share my comedic insights with the world, I'll be thinking of you and celebrating the unique bond we share. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there, biological, adopted, and everything in between. You are truly the unsung heroes of the human comedy.
